The story
When I'm planning a holiday, I like to scout out the best brunch spots in advance. What better way to start the day than with a breakfast that'll keep me going well into the afternoon? And it has to be said: in Malta, the real brunch culture isn't quite as developed as in the major European capitals yet. That's exactly where WOM (Word of Mouth) fills a gap. Opened in 2022 by the owners of Dr Juice — a well-known name in Malta — it quickly established itself as a brunch reference in Sliema. The proof? Whether on the terrace or inside, the place is very often packed.
The place
Word of Mouth couldn't be better located, right on the seafront promenade, just across from the Font Għadir swimming spot. The shaded terrace seats around twenty, and so does the interior. And speaking of the interior — the 80s American theme gives it a cool, laid-back atmosphere. The staff are in on it too, with their colourful shirts and their easy, natural warmth. The jukebox tucked in the corner is quite a hit; ask the waiter for a few tokens and put on your favourite track. And without giving too much away — take a trip to the toilets and pick up the pink telephone…
The cuisine
There's something for everyone here, savoury and sweet. Naturally I tried both, and my heart goes to the savoury side. The dishes are well put together, inventive, with revisited classics like eggs Benedict on a bed of shoestring fries. I'm always starving in the morning, so the OMFG — recommended to me by one of the waiters — did the job nicely, with its steak on toast and a sauce that ties it all together. The sweet options are worth a look too, though while the three dishes on offer are original, both visually and in taste, they're missing that little touch of comfort. I'm a fussy one, so I'll go on to the drinks — the juices in particular are excellent, but they'd deserve to be served a little more generously (the glass can't hold more than 200ml at most).

The verdict
If someone suggests going for brunch at Word of Mouth, I say yes without hesitation. The food is good, the prices are fair, the vibe is chilled. That said, if you're after a classic brunch, this might not be the place for you. Booking is recommended at weekends — it's very often full.
